He was born prematurely at 35 weeks and had concerning GI issues which prompted a transfer to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where he underwent his first exploratory surgery at only 3 days old. The surgeons discovered that Emmett had a meconium ileus\, a bowel obstruction which resulted in him having an ileostomy\, and concern for Cystic Fibrosis (“CF”). He spent a month in the NICU where his parents learned that his genetic tests were positive for CF. By the age of 2 Emmett had undergone a total of 5 intense abdominal surgeries and a multitude of hospital visits. He underwent a heavy regimen of daily medications and treatments as well. Between the ages of 4 and 6 Emmett was admitted regularly to the hospital for Cystic Fibrosis related GI illnesses in which he spent weeks at a time undergoing procedures and treatments. At age 5 Nationwide Children’s began pushing for approval for a newly FDA approved CF medication called Trikafta. Emmett was finally approved when he turned 6 and has had a major turn around in his quality of life. Emmett has been able to reduce his medication intake by more than half\, he has more energy\, and has finally been able to keep up in school thanks to not having a hospital admission in a year and a half\, the longest yet! The research that goes into medications like Trikafta has made a world of difference for Emmett and others just like him by allowing him to live a full and wonderful life that isn’t weighted down by complications related to his Cystic Fibrosis.
